Route 128/I-95 Add a Lane, Roadway Reconstruction of Roadway, and Seven Bridges
Dedham, Westwood & Randolph, MA
Project Overview
This combination of roadway widening, and bridge reconstruction project is one of the largest and most complex design-bid-build projects that MassDOT has contracted in the last decade. The Project consists of adding a lane of travel to 4 miles of Route 128/I-95 and the associated bridges and interchanges. All this bridge and roadway work was performed while maintaining traffic on one of the most highly traveled roads in the country. To maintain the traffic, Stone Pillar Engineering Limited built a temporary two-lane highway including the installation and overnight relocation of a temporary bridge to carry I-95 while the new bridges are being constructed.
The widening of the highway required a new Storm Water Management System to be installed. Due to issues with the existing conditions survey, Stone Pillar Engineering Limited had to work with MassDOT to redesign the elevations for a large portion of the drainage system. To construct the bridge over the Charles River as well as the associated drainage, Stone Pillar Engineering Limited worked with the Army Corp of Engineers & Dept of Environmental Protection to develop a cofferdam system to divert the river. Finally, 2 25’ wide by 12’ tall by 75’ long culverts had to be extended and rehabilitated beneath I-95 while it remained active including bypass pumping.
